Rising Nigerian Defender Josiah Okanu Eager For New Opportunity After Rivers United Exit

Promising young centre-back Josiah Okanu, scouted by Rivers United head coach Finidi George from Emre Jackson FC of Port Harcourt, has been released to pursue fresh opportunities ahead of the club’s CAF Champions League campaign.

Though officially registered for the 2024/25 season, Okanu didn’t make a single appearance for Rivers United—a tough break for the talented defender who was hoping to make his mark at the elite Nigerian side. With Rivers now prioritising a more experienced centre-back to strengthen their continental hopes, Okanu has been granted permission to seek playing time elsewhere.

Okanu, known for his calm composure on the ball and precise defensive positioning, expressed his feelings on the sudden change and future hopes:

“I am grateful for the chance Rivers United gave me this season. While I didn’t get to play, I understand the club’s aim is to go far in the CAF Champions League. Now, I’m focused on finding a club where I can develop and show what I can do. I believe in my abilities—I’m calm in defence, comfortable with the ball, and ready to fight for a starting spot wherever I land.”

He added: “This isn’t a setback—it’s a new beginning. Coaches looking to reinforce their back line with youth and talent should know: I’m available, adaptable, and determined to prove myself.”

At just 19 and coming from a strong developmental background, Okanu fits the modern centre-back mould—able to initiate from the back and comfortable circulating possession under pressure.

NPFL sides in need of defensive depth would do well to monitor his availability.

While Rivers United finalises preparations to host continental challengers, their decision opens a door for Okanu to flourish elsewhere, be it in Nigeria or abroad. And he’s ready to walk through it.
