Super Falcons’ Madugu Apologises After Algeria Stalemate, Pleads With Fans To Keep Faith

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has apologised to Nigerian football fans following the team’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Algeria in their final Group B match at the ongoing 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The result marked a historic moment for Algeria’s Lady Fennecs, who secured qualification to the quarter-finals for the first time ever, while Nigeria advanced as group runners-up.

Madugu, who made eight changes to the starting lineup that defeated Botswana 1-0, explained that the decision was tactical—resting key players ahead of Friday’s crucial quarter-final against Zambia’s Copper Queens. Despite controlling possession, the Falcons were repeatedly denied by Algeria’s compact defense and the brilliance of goalkeeper Chloe N’gazi Boumrar.

“Everyone expected the team to win, but we could only settle for a draw. We are very sorry,” Madugu said. “We promise to do better next time as we continue to look for ways to improve.”
