NSC Applauds Junior D’Tigress After Historic Win Over China At FIBA U19 World Cup

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress following their thrilling 93–88 comeback victory over China in the opening game of the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic.

Despite trailing 44–38 at halftime, the Nigerian U19 Women’s Basketball Team showed tremendous grit and determination in the second half, launching a fiery comeback that stunned the Chinese side and captured international attention.

Reacting to the win, NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised the team’s spirit and preparation:

“This victory is not just a win on the court—it is a statement of what Nigerian sports can achieve with focus, teamwork, and the right support. Our J’Tigress U19 girls have demonstrated courage and resilience, and we are extremely proud of them.”

The performance of Nora Ezike stood out as she led the charge with 25 points, including an incredible 16 in the fourth quarter, helping to seal the memorable win for Nigeria.

Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, also applauded the girls, noting that the result reflects the rising standards of women’s basketball in Nigeria:

“Today’s triumph is a testament to the growing strength of women’s basketball in Nigeria. The composure, technical discipline, and collective effort from the players and coaching crew speak volumes. We salute the J’Tigress and assure them of our full support as they progress in the tournament.”

The NSC further recognized the tireless efforts of the coaching crew, support staff, and all stakeholders behind the scenes who have worked to prepare the team for the world stage.

With eyes now on their upcoming group matches, the Junior D’Tigress will look to maintain momentum as they continue their campaign in the Czech Republic. The NSC has called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to rally behind the team and support their pursuit of global glory.
