Eguavon Urges Government To Immortalise Late Goalkeeper Peter Rufai

Augustine Eguavon, Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has made a passionate appeal to the Nigerian government to immortalise legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who recently passed away.

Eguavon, a former teammate and coach, described Rufai as an “icon of Nigerian football” and said it would be a fitting tribute to name a stadium or sports facility in his honour.

“Rufai wasn’t just a great goalkeeper; he was a symbol of excellence, patriotism, and humility,” Eguavon said. “He gave everything for Nigeria. It’s only right that his legacy is permanently remembered through something significant.”

Peter Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” was a stalwart in Nigeria’s golden era of football. He represented the national team in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations. His leadership, professionalism, and charisma endeared him to both fans and teammates.

Eguavon urged both state and federal governments to consider naming a stadium or football academy after Rufai, saying such a gesture would inspire future generations of players. “We often wait too long to celebrate our heroes,” he said. “Rufai deserves this while his legacy is still fresh in the minds of Nigerians.”

Since Rufai’s passing, tributes have continued to pour in from across the football community. Many have recalled his sportsmanship, discipline, and his contributions to Nigeria’s rise on the international football stage.

Eguavon concluded by stating that immortalising Peter Rufai would not only honour his memory but also send a strong message about the country’s commitment to recognising those who made lasting contributions to sports. “Let’s show our appreciation for a true legend,” he said.
