The Super Falcons of Nigeria kick-started their quest for a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title—dubbed “Mission X”—with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group B opener on Saturday with Babajide Rinsola marking her WAFCON Debut with two goals Contribution.
The Nigerian trio of Asisat Oshoala, Omorinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo ensured the Falcons made a bold statement of intent at the start of the tournament, combining to dismantle the Carthage Eagles with ease and flair.
Barcelona star Oshoala opened the scoring in just the 4th minute, heading home from a perfectly delivered set piece by Babajide, who was making her debut WAFCON appearance. The early goal set the tone for what would become a dominant performance by the nine-time African champions.
Despite several missed opportunities, including a dazzling run and shot by Deborah Abiodun in the 40th minute, Nigeria maintained control throughout the first half.
Their persistence paid off in the dying moments of the half, as Babajide marked her WAFCON debut in style—netting her first ever goal for Nigeria with a composed finish to double the lead.
In the second half, head coach Justin Magudu introduced Christy Ucheibe, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo, all of whom brought renewed energy into Nigeria’s attacking play.
Defender Ashleigh Plumptre nearly added a third with a thunderous long-range effort in the 50th minute, but her shot was parried by the Tunisian goalkeeper.
There was a brief moment of concern in the 78th minute when Osinachi Ohale was penalized in the box, but a VAR review overturned the decision, offering relief to the Super Falcons.
Substitute Ihezuo finally sealed the win with a composed left-footed strike in the closing stages, ensuring Nigeria began their WAFCON 2024 campaign on a perfect note—3 goals, 3 points, and a clean sheet.
With this result, Nigeria tops Group B and sends a strong message to other contenders as the Super Falcons march confidently toward their 10th continental crown.
