Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles’ coach, Aliyu Zubairu has hinted that he might take a largely ‘experimental squad’ to the upcoming West African Football Union (WAFU-B) U20 Championship in Ghana.
Sports247 reports that, with the impending competition, which begins this Thursday in Accra, serving mostly as an invitational event, Zubairu acknowledged that it affords him the opportunity to test new players ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
The former El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri coach disclosed, “The WAFU-B invitational that is coming up in Ghana from the 10th of this month will help us have a correct evaluation of new players that are coming into the team.
“About six new players are coming to join us in camp, but we can not assess them properly and know their true level from training only.”
While also keeping an eye on the team’s trip to Chile for the Youth Mundial, Zubairu projected that playing at the upcoming sub-regional competition will equally serve as part of his preparations for the major task ahead of him and all the players.
“A competition like this can be of help to evaluate the players, know the level they have, and see if they can fit into what we are looking for. So, that is the major advantage of this competition,” Zubairu affirmed.
