The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the passing of the 61-year-old in an official statement, describing the news as a devastating blow to the nation’s football heritage.

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary General of the NFF, expressed his sorrow:

“This is really, really shocking. I am perplexed. May God bless his soul”

Peter Rufai was the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play at the FIFA World Cup, featuring prominently at the USA ’94 tournament where he helped the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16 in their maiden appearance. His athleticism, leadership, and charisma made him a cult hero among fans, and his name became synonymous with goalkeeping excellence in Nigeria.

Current Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa joined the outpouring of tributes:

“Can’t believe I’m typing this – a post to bid farewell to a true giant of Nigerian football, Peter Rufai. Your heroic reflexes and unwavering presence between the posts brought us pride on the world stage.

May your spirit continue to inspire future generations of Super Eagles. Though you’ve left us, your legacy soars higher than any trophy. Fly high, DODOMAYANA — the nation mourns a hero. Rest in peace, legend.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also paid tribute:

“It is with deep sorrow that I mourn the passing of our legendary national team goalkeeper, Peter Rufai. His death is a profound loss to the global football community.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and the Nigerian football community. His remarkable contributions to the beautiful game will always be remembered.”

Fan tribute by Sly:

“This is the one we grew up to meet in between the Super Eagles goal post. We called him Peter Rufai. Nicknamed Dodo Mayana. As kids, we hardly differentiated between ‘Peter’ and ‘Keeper.’ One of Nigeria’s finest. RIP.”

Peter Rufai played for clubs across Nigeria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain during an illustrious career that spanned over two decades. He earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles and was part of the team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rufai’s larger-than-life persona, acrobatic saves, and iconic nickname, “Dodo Mayana,” ensured his place in Nigerian folklore. He remains a symbol of the golden era of Nigerian football.

He is survived by his wife and children. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.

May his soul rest in peace.
