Nigerian-German Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu Breaks Neuer’s Record, Eyes Senior Germany Call-Up After U21 EURO Heroics

Noah Atubolu, a goalkeeper of Nigerian descent, has made headlines after breaking Manuel Neuer’s record for most appearances with Germany’s U21 national team during the 2025 UEFA U21 European Championship.

The 23-year-old SC Freiburg shot-stopper delivered a standout performance in Germany’s 3–0 semi-final win over France, earning his 21st U21 cap and surpassing Neuer’s previous record.

Atubolu, who has already impressed in the Bundesliga with clean sheet streaks and penalty saves, played a key role in securing Germany’s place in the tournament final against England.

Despite eligibility for Nigeria, Atubolu has committed his international future to Germany, stating his ambition to become the senior team’s first-ever Black goalkeeper.

With Marc-André ter Stegen injured and Manuel Neuer retired, Atubolu is now seen as a top contender for a senior national team call-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Germany will face England in the U21 EURO final this weekend, with Atubolu expected to start in goal once again.
