Renowned basketball administrator, Colonel Sam Ahmedu (retired) has raised alarm over what he described as ‘unknown plans’ being put in place for the country’s female team, D’Tigress, towards this year’s continental championship in Cote d’Ivoire.
Sports247 gathered that, with this year’s African Women’s Basketball Championship (AfroBasket 2025) set to tip-off on July 25th in Abidjan, Ahmedu is surprised that plans for the country’s team by the governing body have not been disclosed to the board members.

However, Ahmedu, who is also FIBA Africa Zone 3 president, disclosed that he is staying optimistic for a good outing by the six-time champs, whose players he believes are good enough to overcome any hurdle.
Ahmedu enthused, “We hope that our team will do well. We have been champions at four tournaments in a row … back-to-back and back-to-back twice. That’s in addition to the earlier two that we won … meaning we have won six altogether.”
The Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) executive committee member acknowledged that D’Tigress is a solid squad with great players, but warned that their efforts in Abidjan might be truncated due to poor support from the sport’s governing body at home.
He added, “We have the players, and we hope that our players will do very well. But, on our part, we also need to do our homework and prepare them well.
“What is the plan? I don’t know. But I know, as usual, the Nigerian spirit is very strong. We, the board members, should know what the plans are, but a lot of us don’t know it.”
The outspoken former military officer concluded by stressing that he is in the dark with the NBBF’s build-up plan towards the forthcoming competition, but expressed hope for a glorious outing by the team come next month.
“We don’t have to go to the press and keep saying everything. All I know is that it is a board issue and the leadership style, but we wish our team well,” Ahmedu signed off.
