The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that the national trials for the 2025 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18 and U-20 Championships will be held from June 30 to July 1 at the Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, Ogun State.
The trials will serve as the final selection process for Nigerian athletes aiming to represent the country at the continental championships, scheduled for July 16 to 20 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
According to the CAA, the main championship will bring together over 800 athletes from more than 50 African nations, competing across a range of track and field disciplines in the U-18 and U-20 categories—including sprints, middle- and long-distance races, jumps, throws, hurdles, and relays.
To ensure fairness and transparency, the AFN has mandated strict documentation requirements for all participating athletes. These include:
National Identity Slips
Birth Certificates
School Leaving Certificates
WAEC Results (where applicable)
The federation has warned that incomplete documentation may lead to disqualification, urging all athletes to come fully prepared.
Following the trials, successful athletes will proceed to a national training camp where preparations for the continental showpiece will intensify. The camp will focus on physical conditioning, technical refinement, and team bonding, particularly for relay events.
As part of its early groundwork, the AFN had previously invited 90 junior athletes to a preliminary training camp, underscoring its commitment to a strong showing on home soil.
This year’s CAA U-18/U-20 Championship marks the first time Nigeria will host the event under the current AFN leadership. Originally slated for Oran, Algeria, the event was relocated to Abeokuta due to “various reasons,” according to the CAA.
Meanwhile, Kenya has concluded its own trials, with 45 athletes selected and scheduled to enter camp from June 30 to July 13 before flying to Nigeria for the championship.
The 2025 edition will be the third combined staging of the U-18 and U-20 continental championships and is expected to serve as a launchpad for Africa’s emerging track and field talents.
