2025 President Federation Cup Final: “Egungun Be Careful” – Giant-Killers Abakaliki FC Threaten Kwara United’s Continental Ambitions

Chases Leventis United 41 Year Old History

In a season marked by twists and turns, relegation and redemption, Abakaliki FC are on the brink of scripting one of the most remarkable underdog stories in Nigerian football history.

Having recently dropped from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the third-tier Nationwide League One (NLO), the Ebonyi-based club now stands one win away from claiming the prestigious 2025 President Federation Cup and rewrite the story of their season.

The grand finale is set for Saturday, June 28, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Abakaliki FC began their Federation Cup journey as a second-tier team, NNL but will contest the final as an NLO side, a misfortune that now positions them to chase a 41 year old record in the competition.

They are poised to become the first third-tier club to win Nigeria’s oldest football competition in over four decades — a feat last achieved by Leventis United in 1984.

True to the magic of the Federation Cup, which has often served as a platform for unfancied teams to shine, Abakaliki FC have marched to the final by eliminating four Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) teams.

Their victims include, Katsina United (3–2 on penalties), Nigeria moat decorated side, Enyimba (2–0) on their way to the crucial stages.

They went on to defeat Nasarawa United and Ikorodu City 5-4 on Penalties in the quarter finals and semi finals respectively.

Now, they face their biggest challenge yet, Kwara United FC, a top-flight side chasing their first-ever Federation Cup title and a ticket to next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, a highly motivated to achieve both.

However, Abakaliki FC’s fairytale run signals clear danger, threatening these dual ambitions as the Rice City boys are
fearless, and their string of upsets against NPFL sides are no fluke.

Perhaps, inspired by Elkanemi Warriors, an NNL side who captured the heart of fans by winning the President Federation Cup last year by defeating an NPFL side, Abia Warriors, in the final and went ahead to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup.

This year, the narrative could take a similar turn again, but with a twist of a relegated NNL club potentially lifting the Cup and representing Nigeria on the continent.

Saturday’s showdown promises not just a clash of clubs, but of aspirations. For Kwara United, the stakes are high and they the overwhelming favorite based on quality and pedigree.

However, Abakaliki FC have shown time and again, reputation means little in the Federation Cup.

As the saying goes on the streets of Lagos, “Egungun be careful.” The Rice City boys are coming for history, a crowning moment that may just change the story of their season.
