The new director-general at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Honourable Philip Shaibu, has promised to introduce a massive overhaul at the citadel for training of trainers, but wondered why the centre is not recognised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Sports247 reports that Shaibu is still settling down and familiarising himself with everything at the institution that is located within the premises of Lagos National Stadium, Surulere, but he is already coming out with a number of policy statements.

Shaibu, who was a member of the Edo State House of Assembly and the Federal House of Representatives before he became deputy governor, pointed out that while some structures at the NIS are still in good condition, many others have to be replaced or renovated.
The former deputy governor of Edo State disclosed, “Coming here is another challenge, and I have seen a few things. There are good ones, and there are very, very bad ones. For the infrastructure, there are some that are still good.
“But, looking with my eyes, and based on experience in supervision of facilities like this, I think, when it comes to integrity of the structure, although it’s standing, it will need a serious overhaul and some of them definitely will need to be knocked down, for us to rebuild.”
Shaibu, who played some matches in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) for Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City during his days as deputy governor, further acknowledged the presence of some solid structures at the NIS, but wondered about its lack of accreditation by CAF.
“The major structures here are still having solid spots, needing just to renovate and bring them back to life, but there’s still a negative impression about this place, which I discovered when Edo Queens’ coach could not sit on their bench in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
“It means we must look at the status of this place and the certificates they offer. In doing that, we need to check the affiliation of this place, and we must also see why CAF will not recognize the certificates issued from here,” Shaibu, who assumed office on May 24, stressed
