The Ikeja Football Coaches Council has announced the passing of one of its founding members and revered grassroots football icon, Elder (Coach) Dayo Ogunnaike.
In an official statement released by the Council’s Public Relations Officer, the body expressed deep sorrow over the death of Coach Ogunnaike, describing him as a “foundational figure in grassroots football” and a man who served as a coach, mentor, spiritual guide, and father figure to many within the football community.

“Elder Ogunnaike was not only a coach but also a tireless advocate for youth and community development through football. His humility, integrity, and commitment to nurturing the next generation of players and coaches have left an indelible mark on our hearts and on the sport we cherish,” the statement read.
Throughout his decades of service, Elder Ogunnaike was known for his discipline, wisdom, and godly leadership—qualities that endeared him to players, fellow coaches, and community members alike.
The Council extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, church community, mentees, and colleagues, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
“His voice may be silent, but his influence will never fade. Rest well, Elder (Coach) Dayo Ogunnaike. Your legacy lives on,” the statement concluded.
Elder Ogunnaike’s passing marks the end of an era in grassroots football in Ikeja, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
