Bayern Cup Nigeria: Selection of Teams and Players Has Been Fair – Edeh

The facilitator of the Bayern Youth Cup Nigeria, Victory Obinnah Edeh, has reaffirmed the fairness and credibility of the selection process used in identifying the nation’s most promising young footballers for the globally respected youth competition.

Speaking at the 2025 edition of the tournament in Lagos, Edeh, emphasized that the journey to the national finals is comprehensive, inclusive, and merit-driven—stretching across multiple states in Nigeria.

“We have a tournament in Lagos that would normally have 20 teams — that’s 200 to 300 players. Then we move to cities like Jos, Kano, Kaduna, Kogi, Enugu, and others,” Edeh explained. “Each regional event condenses hundreds of talents down to just 10 who go on to represent their state. So, by the time we get to the national finals, the top 100 to 120 players have already been battle-tested and proven. They’re already champions at their level.”

He cited notable alumni of the tournament as evidence of the depth and fairness of the selection, naming Christian Wachukwu and Stanley Ihenanacho, who were merely backup players in 2020 but have since gone on to international careers.”

” Wachukwu now plies his trade at Sheffield United, while Ihenacho is signed with Midtjylland and is currently playing in Portugal’s Division 2.

“These boys didn’t even make our top 10,” he said. “They were backups. Yet today they are playing in Europe and have represented Nigeria at U-17 level. If those not selected at the final stage can reach such levels, then that’s proof that the process is working.”

Edeh also underscored the rigorous criteria involved in the final team selection, which is handled by Lars Severin, the long-time Bayern Youth Cup scout and legend affiliated with the German club’s global outreach.

“When we get to the national finals, Lars takes over. And when I look at his choices, I can understand them. He looks at the attributes and archetypes needed to succeed in Europe. Whether it’s the height of a goalkeeper or the speed and instincts of a striker, there are key metrics. But beyond that, it’s about chemistry, teamwork, and above all—attitude.”

He stressed that the program values character development as much as raw talent.

“With Bayern, it’s not just about ability on the pitch. We’re looking for willingness to learn and attitude off the pitch. That’s what separates a good player from a professional.”

A Decade of Opportunity: Bayern Youth Cup in Nigeria

Since its launch in Nigeria in 2012, the Bayern Youth Cup has offered a rare platform for U-16 boys across the country to showcase their skills and compete for a chance to represent Nigeria at the global finals held annually in Germany. Nigeria is one of only a handful of countries globally—alongside the USA, China, India, and Thailand—granted participation rights by FC Bayern Munich.

The competition is designed as a grassroots-to-global pipeline: starting with local qualifiers, followed by zonal and state selections, culminating in a national final where 10 players are chosen to fly to Munich for the Bayern Youth Cup World Finals.

In past years, players from the Nigerian contingent have had the privilege to train at Bayern’s facilities, meet club legends, and compete at the iconic Allianz Arena.

Some have earned trial invitations to European clubs, while others have joined Nigerian national youth teams.

Edeh concluded by inviting stakeholders and football development enthusiasts to support the initiative.

“This is not just a football tournament—it’s a national movement. We are building future professionals and giving them a global platform. That journey starts in the streets of Jos, Kano, or Enugu, but it could end at the Allianz Arena.”
