Ogun2025: Ogunkunle Issa Olatunji Wins Four Gold Medals, Reflects on Festival,Future in Para Table Tennis

Four-time gold medallist at the just-concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, Ogunkunle Issa Olatunji, has expressed gratitude for his achievements and praised the organization of this year’s event in Ogun State.

Representing the host state in para table tennis, Ogunkunle participated in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories.

“This is the first National Sports Festival I’m representing Ogun State, and I won four gold medals,” Ogunkunle told Sports247 in an exclusive interview.

Having previously competed in four different editions of the festival, Ogunkunle described the Ogun 2024 event as the best so far in terms of facilities and preparation.

“This one supersedes the others. The preparation, the environment, the hall—everything is just superb.”

He also acknowledged the presence of new athletes in the para table tennis category, which he believes signals growth and development in the sport.

“We’ve seen a new set of athletes representing their states. Maybe when they go back, they’ll keep training. With continuous training, I’m sure they’ll become international players for us.”

Looking ahead, Ogunkunle revealed plans to retire from active competition after the Los Angeles Paralympic Games. However, while many might expect him to transition into coaching, he firmly ruled that out.

“No, I don’t like coaching because it is hypertensive. Coaching is something else.”

Instead, he expressed a willingness to offer mentorship to younger players who look up to him.

“If they seek advice from me, I advise them to maintain their steeze, continue their training, and focus.”

With four gold medals and a reputation as one of the festival’s standout athletes, Ogunkunle Issa Olatunji continues to inspire the next generation of para table tennis players, even as he prepares for life after competition.
