Aghahowa Backs Dessers as Osimhen’s Potential Successor

Former Super Eagles striker Julius Aghahowa has thrown his support behind Cyriel Dessers, suggesting the Rangers forward has the potential to fill the big shoes of Victor Osimhen—if handed more opportunities.

Speaking in a recent interview, Aghahowa emphasized the importance of consistent game time for players to gain confidence and fully demonstrate their abilities.

“Yes, if we give him more chance to play and give him more role. Sometimes, when you don’t give the players that confidence, if you don’t give them the chance to prove themselves, the players might fizzle out because they don’t have enough playing time,” Aghahowa said.

Dessers has had limited opportunities with the Super Eagles despite impressive club form, often playing a supporting role to Osimhen and other top strikers. Aghahowa believes this limited exposure has slowed his national team’s impact.

“If you don’t give them that playing time, they might not produce enough for you to see how their talents can develop. I think from the way he’s going, he’s doing really well, but we need to give him more chance to play.”

With Osimhen nursing injury concerns and Nigeria eyeing key fixtures ahead of AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, Aghahowa’s call may provide food for thought for the national team selectors.
