OGUN 2025: Nigeria Levels Up: Esports Makes Historic Debut At National Sports Festival

In a landmark moment for Nigeria’s digital sports evolution, the Esports Federation of Nigeria (EFN) is set to officially demonstrate competitive gaming at the 22nd National Sports Festival, which kicks off tomorrow in Ogun State.

This debut marks more than just a performance—it signifies Nigeria’s bold entry into the global esports stage, backed by the recognition of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

With official approval to showcase esports at the festival, the game is not only being acknowledged but is now on the fast track toward national adoption.

“This isn’t just about gaming—it’s about opening the floodgates of opportunity,” said Damilola Pedro, Chief Operating Officer of EFN.

“By being part of the National Sports Festival, esports is now a legitimate arena for youth development, economic innovation, and international visibility. Nigeria is ready to lead Africa in digital sports.”

Pedro, a trailblazer in Africa’s tech-sports crossover, also serves as co-founder of Gamr Africa. Under her leadership, the EFN has rapidly expanded its reach and impact, pushing for inclusion, innovation, and empowerment in the gaming ecosystem.

The National Sports Commission echoed this sentiment. Hon. Bukola Olopade, NSC Director General, said:

“Esports has the power to engage millions and inspire the next generation. Its inclusion here signals a new chapter where sports and technology grow hand-in-hand to empower our youth.”

With over 46 million Nigerians actively engaged in gaming, the industry is booming. The EFN aims to channel this energy into structured competitions, career paths, and education through STEAM-aligned initiatives.

Tomorrow’s showcase isn’t just an exhibition—it’s a declaration. Nigeria is not just participating in the global esports movement; it’s positioning itself as a leader.
