Flying Eagles captain, Daniel Bameyi, has extended heartfelt gratitude to God and to Nigerians for their unwavering support following the team’s third-place finish at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Egypt — a match the Flying Eagles won 4-1 on penalties to clinch the bronze medal — Bameyi acknowledged the importance of the achievement while stressing that the focus must now shift to greater goals ahead.

“We give God the glory and thank all Nigerians for believing in us. Winning bronze wasn’t the original plan, but it’s still something to be proud of. Now our full attention is on the World Cup,” Bameyi said.
The tough-tackling defender, who led the team with composure and resilience throughout the tournament, admitted that while there were positives to take, the squad understands its weaknesses and will work hard to improve before the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
“We know where we need to do better — especially in front of goal. The coaching crew and the players are on the same page, and we’re determined to get it right. The World Cup is a big stage, and we’ll be ready.”
Bameyi also praised the collective effort of the team and appreciated the support from home, adding that representing Nigeria is always an honour.
“This bronze is for the fans, our families, and everyone who stood by us. But we’re not done yet. There’s more to come from this team.”
With the FIFA U-20 World Cup just a few months away, the Flying Eagles will take a short break before regrouping for the next phase of preparation — with high hopes and national pride fuelling their ambition.
