Oyo State has set an ambitious target of finishing among the top two at the 2024 Gateway Games, backed by a strong delegation of over 300 athletes competing in 32 sporting events.
Speaking to Sports247 ahead of the multi-sport competition, the Director of Sports at the Oyo State Sports Council, Alhaji Fatai Adebayo, expressed confidence in the contingent’s preparation and determination to exceed past achievements.

“We are coming with full force,” Adebayo declared. “Oyo State’s strength lies in weightlifting, athletics, judo, boxing, and several other sports. We’ve prepared extensively and are confident of an impressive outing.”
At the previous National Sports Festival held in Delta State, Oyo State secured fourth place with a medal haul of 50 gold, 51 silver, and 62 bronze, totaling 163 medals. This year, the team is aiming higher.
“Our goal is to improve on our last performance. We’re targeting second place, and with the level of talent and preparation we have, we believe it’s achievable,” Adebayo added.
The 2024 Gateway Games promise to be one of the most competitive sporting events in Nigeria this year, featuring talented athletes from across the country.
Oyo State is determined to make a statement and solidify its status as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.
