Nigeria’s Rugby Renaissance: NRFF’s Bold Moves To Elevate the Game

In a decisive push to elevate Nigeria’s presence in African rugby, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) is rolling out an ambitious strategy focused on expanding domestic competitions and nurturing homegrown talent.

General Manager Azeez Ladipo emphasized the necessity of increased local tournaments to bridge the gap between Nigerian players and their counterparts in more established rugby nations.

“To compete effectively, our players need consistent, high-level competition,” Ladipo stated.

The NRFF’s 2025 calendar is packed with events aimed at grassroots development and competitive exposure. Key initiatives include the Rugby Rising Play Nigeria program across 15 states, National 15s League matches in various zones, and the National Open 7s Tournament for U18 boys and girls. These efforts are designed to foster talent from the ground up.

In a significant move to bolster resources and expertise, the NRFF has partnered with Flovale, a business consulting and investment strategy firm.

This collaboration aims to enhance the sport’s commercial viability and establish rugby clubs nationwide, tapping into Nigeria’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing rugby nations.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Ladipo highlighted funding as a critical hurdle, noting that the sport’s growth is hindered by limited financial support. He called on both government and corporate entities to invest in rugby’s development to unlock its full potential.

The NRFF’s comprehensive approach, combining increased competition, strategic partnerships, and grassroots engagement, signals a promising future for Nigerian rugby. With sustained support and effective implementation, the nation is poised to rise as a formidable force in African rugby.
