The torch was handed to the governor at the City Gate along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway by Dorcas Adesokan, celebrated champion and double gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games.

Governor Abiodun described the Unity Torch as a symbol of collective aspirations, resilience, and national cohesion.

“The Unity Torch, commencing its journey across the federation in March, symbolizes more than the forthcoming Gateway Games. It embodies our collective aspirations as a nation where diversity strengthens our unity and where our youths are empowered to shine on the global stage,” he said.

Reiterating Ogun State’s readiness to host the prestigious sports event for the second time, Abiodun emphasized that the torch also represents peace, friendship, and mutual respect among Nigerians, especially the youth.

“This is more than a sports festival; it’s a reaffirmation of our unity, diversity, and the enduring Nigerian spirit. Ogun is ready to showcase not just athletic excellence but also our rich culture and warm hospitality,” he stated.

The National Sports Festival, first established in 1973 to foster unity through sportsmanship, officially kicks off on Friday with athletes from across the country converging to compete, connect, and celebrate Nigeria’s rich heritage.
