The National Sports Commission (NSC) has extended heartfelt sympathy and national solidarity to Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment following a serious abdominal injury sustained during Nottingham Forest’s Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday.
Taiwo, a beloved national figure, was placed in an induced coma after being rushed to the hospital on Monday.
The distressing development followed Nottingham Forest’s medical team’s assessment of the injury, which occurred after a heavy collision with the goalpost during the match.
In an emotional statement, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade expressed deep concern and unwavering support for the 26-year-old forward.
“On behalf of the National Sports Commission and the entire nation, we are fervently praying for Taiwo’s full recovery. He’s a fighter, and we know he’ll come back stronger. His resilience and patriotism continue to inspire millions of Nigerians,” Olopade said.
Olopade described Awoniyi as more than an athlete, calling him a national treasure and a beacon of hope for the next generation of sportsmen.
“From the U-15 to the Super Eagles, Taiwo has consistently answered the nation’s call with grace and determination. His journey is a powerful testimony of commitment to Nigeria. We are incredibly proud of him,” he stated.
Beyond his exploits on the pitch, the NSC also highlighted Taiwo’s philanthropic spirit.
Among his numerous charitable acts is the construction of a sports facility for the Kwara chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), as well as ongoing mentorship and financial support for young, aspiring footballers.
As the country watches and prays for his recovery, Taiwo remains a symbol of courage, generosity, and national pride.
