Sports247 reports that Coach Wemimo was ecstatic after her side began their campaign in the 2025 Super-6 with a shock 1-0 win over the holders, Edo Queens of Benin City.
She then gleefully acknowledged that a new chapter in history would be enacted should her team go on to win the competition a few days after their male squad also emerged as Nigerian champions.
This is considering that their male squad, Remo Stars FC of Ikenne, were officially crowned as champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) at the same venue on Sunday, and Coach Wemimo already envisages having the nation’s male and female winners of 2025 coming from the same stable.
She began by reflecting on Saturday’s victory over Edo Queens and declared: “It was a tough game, but we had our plan, and it worked for us. There was a time when we struggled, so I needed to call one or two of them to correct the errors.
“We were then able to contain their pressure, and I am happy that we won. In fact, winning this game was very important for us. We defeated not just a team but the defending champions, and it was in our first game of the Super-6.”
The amiable coach, who could become the first female tactician to win the NWFL title through the Super-6 format, admitted that defeating the defending champions was a huge start for her side, but acknowledged that they now have to be ready for fierce challenges from other teams in the play-offs, starting with Naija Ratels on Monday.
She theorised, “It’s a good start for us, but now we must work harder. Our next game will be against Naija Ratels, one of the best private-owned clubs in the nation. I respect them a lot, but we are ready for the task. The kind of fight we had against Edo Queens would be doubled; but we are not looking down on them.”
She concluded by confessing that making history with the club is her biggest personal target, but conceded that it will not be an easy task to accomplish, as every other club in the play-offs equally wants to return home with the trophy at stake.
“For us, getting to this extent in just two years means we are doing well; but any team that qualifies for the Super-6 has a target to win the league. It will be tough, but there’s no pressure on us.
“We want to win the title and make history. It would be wonderful that a private-owned club won the male and female leagues of Nigeria in the same season,” Coach Wemimo projected.
