The stage is now fully set for the highly anticipated World Athletics-certified Enugu City International Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, in the coal city of Enugu State.
A high-profile world press conference held on Friday officially heralded the landmark event, which marks a first in the history of South Eastern Nigeria.

Speaking at the conference, Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu Jr, expressed the government’s excitement and long-term commitment to the race.
He announced that Governor Peter Mbah has approved the marathon as an annual event, citing its immense potential and economic viability.
“This is going to be a continuous process and we know that the economy of our state will be boosted with such an international event,” the Commissioner affirmed.
He further explained the strategic choice of a marathon over other sporting events, emphasizing its capacity to engage more youth through mass participation.
Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Company—the race’s consultants—praised the state’s investment in sports under Governor Mbah’s leadership.
“Governor Peter Mbah has continually shown he has a road map for sports development…to make the state a major powerhouse in Nigeria,” she noted.
The press conference boasted a distinguished lineup of dignitaries, including Nigeria Olympic Committee Vice President Chief Solomon Ogba, AFN President Tony Okowa, World Athletics representative Yusuf Ali, and Nollywood legend Nkem Owoh.
With over 3,000 athletes expected in both the 42km full marathon and 10km race, the event promises to be a spectacle of endurance and unity. Notably, Governor Peter Mbah himself will join thousands of runners in the 10km race, pledging to complete the course from start to finish.
