Former Goalkeeper Olufemi Thomas Backs Flying Eagles to Advance from AFCON Group

Ex-Canada 2007 shot-stopper urges players to stay focused, trust in preparation

Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Olufemi Thomas has expressed strong belief in Nigeria’s U-20 team as they begin their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, saying the team has what it takes to qualify from the group and go far in the tournament.

Thomas, who represented Nigeria at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, said he was impressed with the team’s preparation and development leading into the competition, adding that no opponent should be underestimated.

“I want to thank God for a good preparation because they have had a good preparation and time to build up,” Thomas said. “There is no pushover country anymore. Talking about the Kenyans, the Tunisians, and Moroccans—it’s football, and it’s just 11 against 11 players.”

He emphasized the importance of mentality and urged the team to embody Nigeria’s trademark fighting spirit.

“Nigeria has this mindset: never say die. I believe they will come out from the group. I don’t want to know what it is going to look like. I believe the guys, I believe the young lads, that they will come out, and I trust in God to do that for us,” he said.

With high expectations surrounding the Flying Eagles, Thomas’ words add to the growing optimism as the team aims for a strong start and a potential return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup stage.
