6 Days to Go! Presidency Highlights Global Power of Sport as Countdown to April 6 Celebration Intensifies

With just 6 days to go to the 2026 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development has intensified awareness, aligning Nigeria’s preparations with a globally recognized movement that celebrates the power of sport to unite, inspire, and transform societies.

Observed annually on April 6, the day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to recognize the role of sport in promoting peace, social inclusion, and sustainable development across the world.

This year’s global theme, “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” highlights the unique ability of sport to connect people, break down social divisions, and create inclusive opportunities for all.

Speaking as the countdown continues, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, emphasized that Nigeria’s planned activities reflect both the global vision and local impact of the celebration.

“This countdown is not just about preparing for an event, but about aligning with a global movement that recognizes the power of sport to unite people, break barriers, and create opportunities for all.”

Adeboye noted that sport has increasingly become a strategic tool for national development, especially in engaging young people and strengthening communities.

“Sport is one of the most powerful tools we have for development. It promotes discipline, teamwork, and inclusion, while also creating pathways for young people to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society.”

Globally, the day serves as a platform to highlight how sport contributes to key development goals, including health, education, gender equality, and peaceful societies, reinforcing its relevance beyond competition.

In Nigeria, the celebration will feature the Presidential Fitness and Unity Walk and a Community Sports and IDP Camp Outreach, both designed to translate global ideals into real impact at the grassroots level.

Adeboye stressed that the initiative reflects a deliberate effort to ensure that sports development reaches every segment of society.

“We are not just celebrating sport, we are using it as a tool to inspire hope, promote unity, and reach communities that need it the most. That is the true meaning of this day.”

He further called on Nigerians to embrace the spirit of the celebration and actively participate in the upcoming activities.

“As we count down to April 6, I encourage all Nigerians to be part of this movement. Together, we can use sports to build bridges, strengthen unity, and create a better future for our nation.”

With anticipation building, the countdown continues to reinforce a powerful message, sport is not just a game, but a unifying force capable of shaping a more inclusive and peaceful society.
