Sports247 reports that, while assuring that Nigeria will host a unique 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships from August 9th to 14th at Lagos Rugby School, Samuel added that it will be the first of such in any sub-Saharan nation.

Samuel also pointed out that it will be the third international competition for the sport to be hosted by Nigeria, after successfully staging the Junior Épée World Cup in December 2024 and 23rd African Fencing Championships last year.

The fencing boss further revealed that over 24 Commonwealth nations have registered for the championship and explained why the previous venue in Lagos was changed in favour of Rugby School.

He also enjoined corporate bodies to step forward and back the hosting venture, which he also declared needs more government backing, considering that it is a venture that will bring additional prestige for the country.

“The venue was selected for its modern, state-of-the-art facilities and its proximity to hospitality, tourism, and entertainment hubs. This ensures athletes and officials will enjoy excellent accommodation, transport, and leisure options.

“The private sector has shown encouraging support, with institutions like Rugby School Nigeria and companies backing the championships. However, stronger government involvement is needed.

“Hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships is a milestone achievement, and we believe institutional support will help Nigeria maximise the opportunity and deliver a truly memorable event,” Samuel stated.

He concluded by reiterating how valuable it is that Nigeria has the opportunity of welcoming several countries from across the Commonwealth, hence the seriousness with which the fencing federation has started its preparations.

Samuel disclosed, “Preparations have advanced steadily across competition planning, venue readiness, logistics, athlete services, and partnerships. We are organising a pre-championship international training camp in Lagos.

“That will help us to unite athletes ahead of the competition. Everything is moving in the right direction, and our focus is on delivering a world-class event that reflects Nigeria’s ability to host major international tournaments.

“Nigeria’s hosting will be unique in several ways. First, it will be the inaugural edition on African soil, giving it historic significance. Second, we are integrating development initiatives such as an international training camp to foster technical understanding of fencing.”
