2025 AFCON: Morocco, Senegal Await Semi-Final Opponents as Quarter-Finals Continue

Hosts Morocco and 2021 champions Senegal have secured their places in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with both former champions set to learn their last-four opponents later today as the quarter-final stage reaches its conclusion.

At a packed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco delivered an authoritative performance to defeat Cameroon 2–0, keeping alive their quest for a second continental crown—and a first in 50 years.

Earlier in Tangier, Senegal edged past Mali 1–0 in a tightly contested West African derby to book their own semi-final spot.

Morocco End Cameroon Hoodoo in Rabat

Morocco’s victory over Cameroon was both emphatic and historic. Goals from Brahim Díaz in the 26th minute and Ismail Saibari late in the second half sealed a convincing win and sent the Atlas Lions into the AFCON semi-finals for the first time since 2004.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd, Walid Regragui’s side dominated from the outset, pressing high and controlling possession.

Their early authority paid dividends when Díaz—once again Morocco’s standout performer—guided home his fifth goal of the tournament, becoming only the second player in AFCON history to score in five consecutive matches.

Cameroon showed greater intent after the break but struggled to break down a disciplined Moroccan defence. Any lingering hopes were extinguished in the 74th minute when Saibari calmly finished from close range following a well-worked set piece.

Beyond booking a semi-final berth, the win also ended a long-standing AFCON jinx for Morocco, who had never previously beaten Cameroon at the tournament.

The hosts will now face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria.

Senegal Hold Firm Against Mali

In Tangier, Senegal showcased composure and tactical maturity to overcome a spirited Mali side 1–0. Iliman Ndiaye marked his first start of the tournament in style, scoring the decisive goal in the 27th minute after pouncing on a goalkeeping error.

Mali’s task became more difficult when captain Yves Bissouma was sent off for a second booking in first-half stoppage time.

Despite being reduced to ten men, the Eagles defended resolutely after the interval, with goalkeeper Djigui Diarra producing a series of fine saves to keep them in contention.

Senegal, however, managed the closing stages with experience and control, ensuring safe passage into the semi-finals.

Senegal will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between record champions Egypt and holders Côte d’Ivoire, while Morocco await the outcome of the clash between Nigeria and Algeria later tonight.
