2025/26 NPFL: Five Things To Know From Matchday Six

Matchday Six of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) had everything — from history-making wins to late comebacks and a new team at the summit.

Here are the five biggest talking points from the weekend’s action.

Nasarawa United Rise to the Summit

The Solid Miners have been one of the season’s brightest sparks, and their 2-0 victory over Katsina United in Lafia underlined their credentials. Goals from Anas Yusuf and Abubakar Abdullahi pushed them to 13 points, leapfrogging Enyimba into top spot.

Coach Mbwas Mangut was quick to temper the excitement, insisting:

“We have to remain focused. It’s not time for celebration yet because the league is a marathon and still at its infancy.”

Continental Crash-Outs Shake NPFL Campaign

It was a weekend of mixed emotions for Nigeria’s CAF Confederations representatives.

Abia Warriors bowed out of the CAF Confederation Cup despite a home win, while Kwara United were also eliminated from the competition.

The exits free up their domestic calendar but highlight Nigeria’s struggle to impose itself consistently on the continental stage as teams from Ghana and Mali proved to have a better players than our teams in the NPFL.

3SC Pull Off Another Dramatic Comeback

In Ozoro, Warri Wolves thought they had snatched all three points when Igbunu Evwierhurhoma gave them the lead. But Shooting Stars showed grit and character, scoring twice in two minutes through Qamar Adegoke and Adams Mustapha. The 2-1 win gives the Oluyole Warriors back-to-back victories and some much-needed momentum.

Barau FC Make NPFL History

The standout story of the weekend came from Aba, where newcomers Barau FC recorded their first-ever NPFL win. Despite going behind to Ebuka Nwokorie’s opener for Kun Khalifat, Barau rallied through a Yahaya Ibrahim brace and Hillary Ekawu’s strike to secure a 3-1 triumph.

It was a statement result that etched the debutants firmly into NPFL folklore.

Away Teams Assert Themselves

Traditionally, the NPFL has been a fortress for home sides, but Matchday Six flipped the script. 3SC and Barau FC both claimed dramatic away victories, while Enyimba and Rangers secured draws on the road.

The shift suggests teams are growing bolder in hostile environments, adding unpredictability to this campaign.

The Table Picture

With Nasarawa United (13 points) leading the pack, Enyimba (12 points) in close pursuit, and sides like Niger Tornadoes and Katsina United chasing, the 2025/26 NPFL season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory.

Midweek fixtures will see Remo Stars and Abia Warriors return to league duty after their continental journeys, with more twists surely to come.
