2024 Gateway Games: Opute Takes Medal Haul To Six Golds, Set Three Records and Want More As Swimming Returns On Sunday

After securing six gold medals and setting three new Games records, Clinton Opute is aiming to add more titles to his name as swimming events resume on Sunday at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, Sports247 reports.

The swimming events took a break on Saturday, but the star athlete from Ukwuani Local Government, Delta State, will return to the pool with high hopes of further dominance.

Opute has been the standout swimmer at the Festival so far, rewriting the record books in three major events. He clocked 2:10.6 seconds in the Men’s 200m Butterfly, erasing his previous Games record of 2:13.3 seconds.

In the 400m Freestyle, he improved the previous record of 4:29.05 seconds to a remarkable 4:14.27 seconds.

He also set a new benchmark in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley, reducing the record from 2:16.06 seconds to 2:14.27 seconds.

Speaking to Sporta247 the calm and composed Opute expressed his unwavering determination to win more medals for Team Delta.

“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far, but I’m not done yet. My goal is to win more gold medals and help Team Delta retain the title of National Sports Festival Champions,” he said.

Opute remains Team Delta’s top gold medallist in the men’s swimming events and a key contributor to their commanding lead on the overall medal table as the Festival heads into its final stretch.
