Uchenna Kanu was at the double as the Super Falcons defeated Burundi 4-0 on Sunday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the penalty spot to open the scoring in the 25th minute. Three minutes later, Peace Efih extended Nigeria’s lead, followed by Kanu’s brace either side of halftime.

The Super Falcons finished second in Group C behind South Africa and will now face Cameroon on Thursday, July 14 for a chance to advance to the semi-finals and a place in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

Speaking after their final group game, Kanu told reporters: “I am super proud of the team, and the performance and I’m super excited. This was my first start and the first goal of the tournament and I am thankful for that. I am now looking forward to the next game.

“If you judge our previous games and how hard we have been working and training we are prepared to face any team. We are getting better as a team and I think we are ready to match up with any team.”

The Tigres UANL forward is looking forward to the challenge against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a challenging game, but we are ready and prepared for the challenge.” Kanu added.
