2022 African Wrestling Champions: Nigerian Contingents Win 11 Medals In Morocco

Nigeria continued their impressive show in the African Wrestling scene at the just concluded 2022 African Wrestling Championship that was held in El Jadida, Morocco.

Team Nigeria won 11 medals in total(4 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 4 bronze medals) which implies that all the 11 wrestlers that flied the country’s flag at the Championship won a medal.

Commonwealth silver-medalist Ebikewenimo Welson won silver in the 57kg freestyle while African champions Ogbonna John and Ekerekeme Agiomor both won bronze in the 74kg and 86kg categories respectively.

However, Ogbonna John failed to capitalize on his four straight African title run after he was defeated in the semi final by Egyptian Amir Hussen via a fall victory. He however overcame Brian Oloo of Kenya 10-0 to win bronze in the 74kg class.

Team Nigeria won 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in the Women Wrestling events on the penultimate day of the competition.
