196-Year-Old Zanzibar Tortoise Predicts Two Goals for Nigeria Against South Africa

Zanzibar’s oldest giant tortoise on Prison Island has predicted a two-goal victory for Nigeria ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The Aldabra giant tortoise, believed to be 196 years old and a main attraction at the Prison Island sanctuary off the coast of Stone Town, is widely regarded as one of the oldest living creatures on earth. Visitors and handlers say the tortoise “chose” a marker representing Nigeria’s score, stopping at the number two, in a symbolic prediction that the Super Eagles will find the net twice in their crucial match against Bafana Bafana.

Prison Island, once a former jail and quarantine zone, is now home to dozens of Aldabra tortoises, with some over 150 years old. The 196-year-old tortoise is considered the elder of the colony, attracting global tourists fascinated by its longevity and endurance.

The prediction comes as excitement builds ahead of Nigeria’s clash with South Africa in the CAF World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria, under new coach Eric Chelle, are chasing vital points after a difficult start to their campaign. South Africa currently sit ahead of the Super Eagles in the group standings, adding pressure to the fixture.

Chelle, who famously guided Mali to a 2-0 victory over South Africa at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has never lost to Bafana Bafana as either a coach or a player. His record, coupled with the tortoise’s “prophecy,” has fueled optimism among Nigerian supporters.

Across social media, fans have shared clips and comments about the prediction, with some calling the tortoise the “African oracle.” Others believe the story adds a mystical layer to a fixture already charged with rivalry and high stakes.
