On the cracked courts of Surulere, Ebuka Okere, an 18-year-old basketball player, continues to chase his dream of making it big despite years of setbacks and struggles.

Known in his community for his passion and determination, Okere stands out as one of the few who have refused to quit the game, even as many of his peers dropped out due to financial and personal challenges.

His journey has been far from smooth. From recurring injuries to a lack of proper facilities and limited opportunities, o has had to fight for every chance to play.

“Sometimes I can’t even afford good shoes or transport to training, but I still find my way to the court,” Okere told this reporter.

Currently, he competes in small community tournaments and pickup games across Surulere and Yaba. But his eyes are set on bigger stages: one day donning the colors of Nigerian basketball giants Rivers Hoopers or Lagos Islanders.

Okere traces his passion back to secondary school, when he first picked up a basketball.

“The first time I held the ball, I felt something special. That’s when I knew this was what I wanted to do,” he recalled.

Despite the frustrations, his motivation remains strong, fueled by a desire to inspire.

“I want to inspire boys in my area who feel like they can’t make it. If I succeed, it won’t just be for me, it will be for them too,” he explained.

For now, his name is yet to echo on the national stage, but his resilience embodies the spirit of many young Nigerian athletes—dreamers fighting against the odds. With the right support, Okere believes he can overcome his setbacks and one day represent Lagos and Nigeria at the highest levels of basketball.
